The HILL Model

A Roadmap for Literacy Improvement

What is the HILL Model?

The HILL Model is a proven multi-year process that changes the culture of schools. Our research-based approach features a literacy roadmap, which any school can use to develop the systems, processes, and skills to reach all teachers, all children, and dramatically improve literacy rates.

It's Evidence-Based

Our model is based on years of scientific research and experience in the area of whole-school language and literacy transformation.

It's Proven

We have improved reading scores in high poverty, multilingual, and multicultural schools and districts by 20 – 40%. Strong school leadership helps to bring about literacy improvement.

It's Careful Attention and Time

We implement a phased approach in which knowledge, focus, and commitment are used as building blocks to create long-term sustainable results.

It's a Collaborative Partnership

We meet you where you are. We work with your data, teachers, and materials. We fill-in content or literacy gaps and give you customized PD that fits your needs.

Systemic and Sustainable

School districts are the front line of defense against illiteracy. Choosing an approach, implementing a literacy improvement process, evaluating results, and refining action plans all require focus and commitment for long-term change initiatives.

The HILL partners with school districts to shape and guide the process, deploying science-based whole school change through leadership development, teacher training, supportive coaching, and a culture of accountability. The results? Sustained, systemic improvements in literacy.

The HILL can help you strengthen your school or district, empower your teachers, and give more students the gift of literacy. And, you’ll see measurable, reportable results that illustrate your success.

How is the HILL Different?

How We Measure Success

A solid partnership between the HILL and your team. We require 85% participation of school administration, faculty and staff, strong and effective leadership, and a three-to-five year commitment to assure this transformation.
+
Knowledge transfer. We provide training and follow-up support to ensure that educators have the necessary skills and tools to teach every child to read to his or her highest potential.
Measurable results. School transformation is measured by the percentage increase in literacy proficiency as well as observation of teacher classroom practice and school and district leaders’ progress in implementation of school-wide change.

What School Leaders Say

HILL’s intensive literacy model engaged and inspired the entire district to achieve literacy success and some of the best year over year improvements in NECAP Reading scores in the state.  I am proud of the changes we made on behalf of our students and glad we engaged the HILL to help us in this transformation.
