How do we fulfill the expectations of the Common Core with struggling readers, advanced readers and everyone in-between, when we know that close reading is a difficult skill even for experienced, adult readers?
Close Reading can be extremely engaging, productive and confidence-boosting for the struggling reader and the advanced reader alike. The ability to read complex texts closely, thoughtfully and carefully is a key to future academic success.
In this online course, you will:
- Learn strategies for helping students gather evidence, knowledge, and insight from what they read and discuss methods for gradually releasing them towards independence.
- Participate in an adult-level close reading experience.
- Learn to write text-dependent questions for both narrative and expository genres.
- Learn how to provide entry-points for all children through discourse, visual media, and annotation.
You will be provided with a course packet to download in the first module of the training. In addition, 14 Cows for America by Carmen Agra Deedy is required in order to complete Module 5 of this course, and you will need to either purchase it or borrow it from your library.
PLEASE NOTE: This self-paced course can be taken for 10 PDPs. If you are looking for an intensive, facilitated online course for graduate credit please see the course we’re offering through our partner, the Commonwealth Learning Online Institute.
