HILL for Literacy’s online learning platform represents a powerful new model to deliver the HILL’s training in evidence-based teacher training nation-wide. We’re making our courses available directly to teachers, overcoming distance and cost barriers. We know many teachers prefer online courses to fit their busy schedules and we’re thrilled to be able to offer online training in what we know are timely topics in many schools. Our Close Reading for the Common Core (Grades K-5) and Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) for Writing (Grades K-5 and 6-12) trainings are now available on our online platform.

Self-Regulated Strategy Development - Online Course Preview

Course Time Requirements:

This course was originally a 2-Day, 14 hour, in-person course delivered to hundreds of educators who are now happily implementing SRSD in their classrooms. Expect to spend 8-12 hours completing this online course, and a few hours preparing lesson plans. The course can be taken in small steps, one module or example at a time. You will experience positive results right away as you begin to work with your students. Expect to spend approximately 15 lessons to help them master these strategies. Good Luck!

Course Introduction

The ultimate goal of SRSD is to produce competent writers who can self-regulate the complex cognitive processes involved in writing. The modules in this course are designed to lead you through the steps necessary to help students accomplish that goal. We encourage you to engage in the activities and to practice modeling delivery of instruction using the scripts provided so you can get the maximum benefits from the instructional information provided. Importantly, the SRSD Course Modules include strategies, materials, and methodology for students at various levels of proficiency and age. In the course sequence, we typically begin with elementary and then move to middle and high school level materials in each of the modules and tasks. If you are interested in one level over another, you can engage in the activities and download materials just for the level that interests you or for several levels if you have a diverse population of students. When you have completed the course, our expectation is that you will be ready to begin teaching a writing genre in your classroom using SRSD. At the end of each stage, we have designed unit plans for that stage and for different skill levels. We recommend that you review and adapt these unit plans and develop the additional lesson plans needed to actually teach the strategies.

Bourne Schools: Excelling in Writing with SRSD

HILL for Literacy has been working with Bourne Schools to implement Self-Regulated Strategy Development in their district. This initiative was instigated by Julie Rigo, a reading specialist in Bourne who took our SRSD workshop and saw excellent results in a short amount of time. Julie has since become an SRSD trainer herself, and along with HILL facilitators has grown the influence and impact of SRSD in her schools. Bourne has now begun to use these strategies across many subjects in addition to writing. We’re happy to report that a recent post-assessment in grades 3 and 4 of two Bourne elementary schools showed that the average scores rose from 32% on the pre-assessment to 62% on the post-assessment, and overall 94% of the students using SRSD improved in their writing skills!
