About the Asynchronous SOR Course

Our Science of Reading Professional Learning Series teaches critical components of literacy instruction for Primary or Intermediate Grades, integrating current research into each module and translating it into classroom application. The modules address questions such as:

  • What happens in the brain when we read? How can this understanding inform our instruction?
  • How is reading related to oral language?
  • What are high-leverage instructional routines that support reading acquisition?
  • What role does automaticity play in becoming a proficient reader?
  • What cognitive processes are involved in deeply understanding text?
  • How do we know we are using the right assessments to determine student need?
  • . . . and much more!

Why Asynchronous?

Over the past year, the HILL has been rolling out our asynchronous Science of Reading Series for Primary and Intermediate Grades alongside our instructor-led (ILC) series. We also collected survey data from 544 educators in primary and intermediate grades taking both the asynchronous and ILC series at the end of Modules 1 and 5 to check their knowledge of the content. Both versions of the course provide the same excellent, research-based information, but we found there are some advantages to bringing the asynchronous series to a school or district, which have been echoed by the educators enrolled in the course.

  • Feasibility – Attending live sessions can be challenging for educators’ full schedules. Asynchronous courses can be taken after school and teachers can go at their own pace, taking their time to digest and review information.
  • Sustainability – It is easy to go back to review if a refresher is needed later on because the modules will be accessible to them for two years. This helps to ensure sustainability and continuous learning.
  • Equity – Asynchronous courses provide a consistent experience for all teachers in the school or district to ensure common background knowledge and instructional practices. Literacy equity is attainable when students have access to the quality instruction that will empower them to become proficient readers by fostering a culture of continuous learning for educators.

The graph above is one of many that demonstrates teachers are understanding the concepts (or “getting it”) on par or exceeding the ILC version. For both series, very few participants needed additional clarification on the content to be provided by their facilitator.

I love being in the asynchronous course because it allows me to move at my own pace. I like to rewatch videos and hear information again because I like to do note-take during the learning. This has helped me process the information better.

Doing this course at my own pace allowed me to slow down and understand it and have the ability to discuss with colleagues.
