We’re excited to our announce our fall workshop schedule! This year, we’re bringing our very popular Enhanced Core Reading Instruction Workshop and Close Reading & Critical Thinking for the Common Core to Fitchburg, MA. We hope you can join us!
Enhanced Core Reading Instruction
This new 2-day workshop is offered exclusively by the HILL. Developed by researchers at the Center on Teaching and Learning, Enhanced Core Reading Instruction has been rigorously studied in nearly 50 elementary schools with hundreds of classrooms, and thousands of students.
Enhanced Core Reading Instruction is a multi-tiered program featuring a series of teaching routines designed to increase the effectiveness of reading instruction in grades K-2. The routines are used to enhance the instruction associated with ANY core reading program. Enhanced Core Reading Instruction also offers materials that may be used with specific core reading programs including Journeys Common Core 2014, Journeys 2011, Reading Street Common Core 2013, and Reading Street 2011. These materials are for both Tier 1 enhancement and Tier 2 intervention.
Upcoming Dates:
- October 22-23, 2015 – Hammond Hall Campus Center, Fitchburg State University, Fitchburg, MA
Close Reading & Critical Thinking for the Common Core
How do we fulfill the expectations of the Common Core with struggling readers, advanced readers and everyone in-between, when we know that close reading is a difficult skill even for experienced, adult readers?
Close Reading can be extremely engaging, productive and confidence-boosting for the struggling reader and the advanced reader alike. Critical thinking, a highly valuable skill, together with close reading are the keys not only to the Common Core, but future academic success. Furthermore, how do we extend the thinking around a piece of text, enabling students to access deep meanings, create thinking analogies and encourage perspective taking? How do we provide our students with the ability and opportunity to think critically about ideas while they engage with a piece of text? Participants will explore these questions while cultivating their own ability to think critically about these practices. Workshop is appropriate for K-5.
Upcoming Dates:
- November 5-6, 2015 – Hammond Hall Campus Center, Fitchburg State University, Fitchburg, MA
